What favorite bible verse serves as foundation for your spiritual life?

By Paul Dion, STL

I thought that we might give the reader the opportunity to provide a BURNING QUESTION of the week every now and then. I am therefore brazenly presenting the following.

I have been a Catholic all my life. I reserve the right not to declare my age. My father and mother were very devout Catholics. You know the type - more Catholic than the Pope.

Well, my father lived his life in prayer. He was a senior manager and a superintendent in the business world. He and I participated in the 5:30 AM Mass on every Sunday during the year. We never missed a single "Stations of the Cross" celebration during Lent. We received Communion every Sunday when it was only the "Holy Water Font Frogs" who did so. We recited the family rosary every single night of May and October and during the school year we had to answer all the questions of the Baltimore Catechism even though we had been grilled by the nuns in school during the day.

My father was one step ahead of a lot of the Catholics of his day in one respect. He had a Biblical guiding principle for his life. My maternal grandfather did too. Do you?

Our question to you this week is:

What is(are) your favorite and guiding Bible verse(s) that serve as the foundation for your spiritual life?

God is Love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him."
(I John 4:16b) Yes, Paul, I did have to look up the citation. I knew the verse but...

  2. Friends:
Dennis and I are friends. He has heard me say countless times, "
We Catholics know the story, but we don't know the exact reference." His comment made me laugh heartily. Thank you, Dennis.

  3. Lots of them. My most recent memory verse is 1 Timothy 1:15-17:

"It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost. Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example to all who believe in Him for eternal life."

    Another favorite is Romans 5:8

"God demonstrated his love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."

"He who is without sin cast the first stone." I remind myself of this every chance I get so I can learn not to judge other people and their misgivings and meekly accept them with all their human frailties. Love your website. God bless you all.

  5. It is but fair that the questioner be ready to join the party. I will therefore share my favorite Bible passages with you all.

I was brought up reciting my father's daily favorite, Psalm 51, "Have mercy on me, Oh God in your goodness..."
My grandfather's favorite story was Peter swearing and denying Jesus, "...and then the cock crew for the third time." To this day when I hear that story in church, I choke up.

I have since grown up and now I have come home to my own favorites.

Psalm 69: "Save me, God! The water is already up to my neck..."
Isaiah, chapter 6, verses 8b and 9a: "Whom shall I send? Who will be our messenger?" "Here I am, Lord, send me."
John's gospel, chapter 9, the man born blind.
Night Prayer from the official night prayer of the Church: "Lord,
We beg you to visit this house and banish from it all the deadly power of the enemy. May your holy angels dwell here to keep us in peace, And may your blessing be upon us always. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen"

This night prayer was the last prayer recited in our home every single night with our two boys before going to bed.

We have to remember that the Our Father and the Hail Mary come to us from the Bible too. I'll bet that many of us don't think about that often.

We have so many wonderful prayers that have survived throuigh the centuries. Let's keep then on our lips and in our hearts so that we can accustom ourselveas to be close to God, His mother and His devoted disciples.
